• 3.0 out of 5 stars from C. O'leary -- The Christmas Escape : This was a good story, but I found parts of it incredibly repetitive and ended up skimming paragraphs at a time. The characters were likable, each with a different family background that the author beat to death, describing again and again and, a few chapters later, again. I loved the setting, in Lapland, and the descriptions of the Snow Spa resort and surrounding territory were wonderful, not to mention the sledding and snowshoeing parties out into the frozen forest. The storyline was fine. The book could have been considerably tightened up without losing anything, and would have been an improvement, in my view. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from SCD -- Wonderful : One of the best parts of the holiday season is reading Ms. Morgan's annual Christmas novel. This book does not disappoint. It has many layers of storytelling, as other reviews have highlighted. All the characters, and their fears and hopes are relatable, and compelling. The setting is beautiful. When Christy got pregnant and then married Seb, Alix was upset with her friend. The two had only known each other a few weeks. The girls remained best of friends, but there was a unresolved issue between them. After Alix had seen that Christy and Seb were partners and would stay together, she started to understand she was wrong about Seb. The three were planning a trip to Lapland, Sweden. Seb had an important work meeting and couldn’t leave right away. Christy decided to stay home with him. They asked Alix if she would take their daughter Holly to Lapland early. She agreed to do so. Seb and Christy just didn’t tell Alix that they had also asked Seb’s best friend Zac to take care of Holly. Alix had been avoiding Zac since her friends’ wedding. The two, Alix and Zac, took Holly, Christy's adventurous four year old to Lapland to meet family black sheep, Aunt Robyn, while Seb and Christy rediscover their marriage and true, inner selves. Once Christy arrived in Lapland, her mother's family secrets of alcoholism and emotional abuse was revealed explaining her Mom's controlling attitude and the dispute between Aunt Robyn and Mom/Elizabeth. Sarah Morgan has quickly become my go to Christmas book author. It was everything I hoped it would be. This book is about friendship and acceptance at its core. People who want nothing more to be seen for who they are and to be loved unconditionally. I really resonated with that. The setting was also idyllic for a Christmas book. I’m always a sucker for remote, snowy cabins with late night dog sledding to see the northern lights. Definitely recommend for anyone looking to lift their spirits during the holidays. The suspense about the relationship of the sisters and the reason they were estranged was suspenseful. The relationship of the friends individual characteristics of each person made the interactions interesting and kept my interest in how the relationships would work out. Two love stories in one and a family reunion. I fell in love with the setting as well as the characters and really made me want to see the Northern Lights myself. And yet again, The Christmas Escape made me laugh out loud, feel full of warmth, and be overcome with the enchantment of the stunning wintery setting. This is one of those stories where you can’t wait to get to the end to find out what happens, but at the same time you don’t want to because you’d like it to last forever. The story has the usual blend of interesting characters, all with their own emotional baggage and issues. The way they slowly begin to sort out their feelings and mend bridges is truly heart-warming, and I was particularly invested in Alix’s story, hoping she would get a happy ending. It’s a Christmas story, set against the backdrop of gorgeous, snowy Lapland in the north of Sweden – the perfect place for yuletide celebrations. Being half Swedish I am of course a little biased, but the author brought it all to life brilliantly. I absolutely loved this – it’s wonderful! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 5, 2021 )
