As someone that lead efforts in data systems that included Machine Learning at various companies, including Nike, I can attest that what Mo describes in Scary Smart is not science fiction. I initially figured a book about AI was a bizarre departure from his prior work on happiness, but I quickly realized that this book shows off Mo's wisdom on how to live a fulfilling and happy life far more than it shows off his technical and engineering genius. Unlike most doomsday predictions surrounding AI that suggest no solution other than "kill the machines before they kill us", Scary Smart offers a brilliantly original fix: AI is learning from collective humanity as its parents. It processes our words, our reactions, even our emotions, and shapes itself accordingly. Sounds familiar? Yes, AI is like a child, and the best thing we can do to ensure a symbiotic coexistence with it is to be great parents. How do we become great parents? Most authors on artificial intelligence assert that while specific AI for a narrow purpose is relevant today, we are a long way off from general AI that could synthesize inputs and achieve consciousness as humans do. This read was a good thought exercise to consider the direction our world is headed and what the best uses for AI will be, but he might have taken it a step too far. Who knows? We may soon find out.
